Success in business is not built on ambition alone. It is protected by strategy, strengthened by knowledge, and sustained by having the right people in your corner. Throughout my entrepreneurial journey, I've learned that one of the smartest investments any business owner can make is securing trusted legal counsel before challenges arise, not after. That truth was reinforced during my conversation with Attorney James Carter, the 84th President of the National Bar Association, whose career stands as a powerful example of leadership, advocacy, and service.

Too often, people view attorneys solely as problem-solvers brought in during times of crisis. Attorney Carter challenged that perception, emphasizing that legal professionals play a critical role in helping entrepreneurs build stronger businesses, protect their assets, navigate complex regulations, and create lasting legacies. His message extended beyond business, highlighting the importance of civic engagement, voting rights, and ensuring that communities remain informed, empowered, and protected.

James J. Carter serves as the 84th President of the National Bar Association and is the Managing Partner of The Cochran Firm's Trials & Mass Torts section. A nationally recognized civil trial attorney, educator, and public servant, he has dedicated more than 25 years to advocating for clients and advancing justice. His distinguished career includes service as a New Orleans City Councilman, Commissioner of the Port of New Orleans, Chairman of the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors, and adjunct professor at both Howard University School of Law and Tulane University School of Law. Under his leadership, the National Bar Association is advancing its presidential theme, "Meeting the Moment: A Continuing Legacy of Social Engineering and Empowerment," with a strong focus on civic activism, election protection, and community empowerment.

Founded in 1925, the National Bar Association remains one of the nation's most influential Black legal organizations, representing attorneys, judges, law professors, law students, and legal professionals across the country. For more than a century, the organization has stood at the forefront of civil rights, legal advocacy, and professional excellence. As it enters its second century, the NBA continues to expand its impact through initiatives that promote voting rights, legal education, civic participation, and economic empowerment, ensuring that future generations have both the knowledge and resources needed to thrive.

Success Starts with a Strong Legal Foundation

One of the biggest mistakes entrepreneurs make is trying to save money by avoiding legal counsel. I've seen it happen countless times. Business partners make handshake agreements. Contracts are never finalized. Expectations are never clearly defined. Then, when money enters the equation, misunderstandings follow. Attorney Carter explained that contracts are more than paperwork. They are roadmaps that guide business relationships and help prevent disputes before they happen. A properly structured agreement protects everyone involved and ensures that businesses operate within the law. The lesson is simple: investing in legal expertise upfront can save significant financial and emotional costs later.

AI is a Tool, not a Replacement for Expertise

In today's business environment, many entrepreneurs turn to artificial intelligence and online resources for answers. While technology can help people gather information quickly, Attorney Carter emphasized an important reality: AI is only as reliable as the information it receives. Legal decisions, contract negotiations, and business structures require professional judgment. Technology may help start the process, but experienced attorneys provide the insight needed to avoid costly mistakes. As entrepreneurs, we should embrace innovation while recognizing the value of expertise.

Leadership Is About Serving Something Bigger Than Yourself

Attorney Carter's path to becoming President of the National Bar Association wasn't part of some lifelong campaign. Instead, leadership opportunities emerged as he continued serving others. His story is a reminder that leadership often finds those who are willing to step forward when called upon. The National Bar Association carries a powerful legacy. Since its founding in 1925, the organization has played a critical role in advancing civil rights, supporting legal professionals, and advocating for justice across America. What impressed me most was Attorney Carter's commitment to continuing that legacy while addressing present-day challenges.

Voting Is More Than a Right. It's a Responsibility.

One of the most powerful moments of our conversation centered on voter participation.

Attorney Carter discussed the National Bar Association's efforts to educate communities, protect voter rights, and ensure citizens understand the voting process. Through community outreach, educational programs, and election protection initiatives, the organization continues working to remove barriers that prevent people from participating in our democracy. As someone who values opportunity and empowerment, I understand that every election has consequences that impact families, businesses, education, healthcare, and economic growth. Yet millions of eligible Americans choose not to vote. When we consider the sacrifices made by previous generations to secure voting rights, participation becomes more than a civic duty. It becomes an opportunity to honor their legacy and shape our future.

Representation Creates Access

Attorney Carter also addressed the importance of supporting qualified legal professionals who understand the communities they serve. His message was clear: visibility does not always equal expertise. In today's world, advertising often dominates decision-making. But when selecting professional services, whether it's an attorney, accountant, consultant, or advisor, credentials, experience, and proven results should matter more than marketing. The legal profession needs diversity across every specialty, including corporate law, intellectual property, environmental law, healthcare law, civil litigation, and public service. Strong representation ensures individuals and businesses have access to advocates who understand their unique challenges and opportunities.

The Power of Mentorship

One of my favorite topics is mentorship because no successful person reaches the top alone. Attorney Carter shared valuable lessons from mentors who helped shape his life and career. He described mentorship not as a single event but as a daily commitment to helping others gain access, exposure, and opportunity. I often tell people that success leaves clues. The individuals who achieve extraordinary things are usually willing to share what they've learned. The challenge is making sure the next generation has access to those conversations. Whether you're a business owner, executive, educator, or community leader, someone is looking for guidance that only you can provide.

Mentorship doesn't require a formal program. Sometimes it starts with a conversation, an introduction, or simply making time for someone who wants to learn.

Final Thoughts

My conversation with Attorney James Carter reinforced something I've believed throughout my career: success and service go hand in hand. Building wealth, growing a business, and creating opportunities require more than talent. They require preparation, legal protection, civic engagement, leadership, and a commitment to helping others succeed. When we invest in our communities, protect our rights, and mentor the next generation, we create a foundation that allows everyone to win. And that's a lesson worth sharing. At Money Making Conversations Master Class, we celebrate stories like these because they empower others to pursue their own entrepreneurial dreams.

Keep learning. Keep growing. Keep betting on yourself. Most importantly...
